Lake County's Voice On Mental Illness
Lake County's Voice On Mental Illness
Mental Illness is a reaction to stress that often impacts the entire family. Professionals seldom understand what things the family tried to help before a family member went to the hospital.
There is value to families learning from and supporting each other in understanding how to help a person with mental illness. NAMI's Family-to-Family is a curriculum where families learn about mental illness, evidence-based treatment, and how best to support the individual while also supporting each other. The curriculum, taught by trained family members has been tested and updated for decades.
After class, families continue to offer each other ongoing support through the Family Support Program.

Trying to tell the difference between what expected behaviors are and what might be the signs of a mental illness isn't always easy. There's no easy test that can let someone know if there is mental illness or if actions and thoughts might be typical behaviors of a person or the result of a physical illness.
